Management of Radiation Side Effects

  • Identify common acute and late radiation toxicities across major disease sites.
  • Apply evidence‑based prevention and management strategies for skin, CNS, GU, and head & neck side effects.
  • Recognize when advanced supportive measures (e.g., steroids, wound care, speech/swallow therapy) or diagnostic evaluation are needed.

Radiation Therapy for Benign Conditions

  • Describe indications for low‑dose radiation in benign inflammatory and proliferative conditions.
  • Explain mechanisms of action (anti‑inflammatory and anti‑proliferative effects).
  • Evaluate risks, benefits, patient selection criteria, and expected outcomes.
  • Understand current evidence and emerging U.S. clinical trial activity.

Multidisciplinary Management of Spinal Metastases

  • Explain basic spinal anatomy and associated symptomology.
  • Discuss radiographic sequences to assess spinal disease.
  • Identify indications necessitating surgical and radiation involvement.
  • Differentiate between palliative and stereotactic radiation approaches.

Alexa (Lexie) Lantz is a Physician Assistant in Radiation Oncology at Penn State Health in Hershey Pennsylvania where she has worked for the last 6 years and holds a faculty rank of Instructor. She has experience across all disease sites, but currently sees mostly CNS, GU, GYN, and Pediatric patients. In addition to her clinical role, she is part-time at the Penn State College of Medicine Physician Assistant Program.

She will be presenting on the Management of Radiation Side Effects in today’s session.

Amanda F. Meyer, DNP, APRN

Mayo Clinic

Amanda F. Meyer, DNP, APRN, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology and an Instructor in the Department of Family Medicine. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from South Dakota State University, her Master of Science in Nursing from Winona State University, and her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Viterbo University.

Amanda serves as core faculty in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program at Viterbo University. Her professional interests include tobacco cessation, advancement of APP research, and the use of low-dose radiation therapy for benign conditions.
Outside of academia and clinical practice, she is a proud wife of a law enforcement officer and a devoted mother who can often be found chauffeuring her three sons to practices and games.

She will be presenting on Radiation Therapy for Benign Conditions in today’s session.

Kate Martin, PA-C, MBA

Dana-Farber Brigham and Women's Cancer Center

Kate Martin, PA-C, MBA, is the Director of APPs for Mass General Brigham (MGB) Department of Radiation Oncology and Director of APPs for the Department of Medical Oncology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) in Boston.

Kate began her career as a radiation therapist in 2007 at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY, before completing her Honours BSc in Neurobiology at Brock University and attending Weill Cornell Medical College where she obtained her Physician Assistant degree. She completed her MBA at Boston University’s Questrom School of Business.

She started her career in inpatient medical oncology and neurosurgery. She ultimately joined the Department of Radiation Oncology in 2017 and rejoined the Department of Medical Oncology in 2025. Her primary clinical focus is adult and pediatric diseases of the central nervous system, both in the ambulatory and inpatient setting. Her administrative role focuses on oncology APP strategy, utilization of APPs in radiation and medical oncology, leadership development, and systems integration.
